The Plan-As-You-Go Business Plan, by Tim Berry, published by Entrepreneur Press, 2008. This one is also available online at planasyougo.com, so if you’re willing to read it online then you don’t have to buy it. this is included with Business Plan Pro, as an eBook.

3 Weeks to Startup, by Tim Berry and Sabrina Parsons, Entrepreneur Press, 2008. This should be available in the bookstore, also in local Borders and Barnes & Noble, and online at amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, and borders.

The Art of the Start, by Guy Kawasaki, Portfolio Press, 2004. This is included with Business Plan Pro, as a physical book. You can get it sent to you from the local office of Palo Alto Software, which is based here in Eugene.

Note: Aside from the fact that these are trade books and not textbooks (so they are a lot cheaper), there is more good news about books for this class:
- The Plan-As-You-Go Business Plan book is bundled for free as an ebook with Business Plan Pro, which is available to you from Palo Alto Software directly, for the academic price, if you choose to buy Business Plan Pro as part of this class. You should call Palo Alto Software at 541-683-6162 and talk to someone in sales to get the details. Or you can order online at www.paloalto.com/academic/students/. And, even if you don’t get Business Plan Pro, the Plan-as-You-Go Business Plan book is also available in its entirety free online at planasyougo.com. So, it’s a great book — I wrote it — but you don’t technically have to buy it. You do have to read it.
- The Art of the Start may also be available bundled with Business Plan Pro, depending on which version you get. You should call Palo Alto Software at 541-683-6162 and talk to someone in sales to get the details. And if it isn’t in the bookstore, it is easy to get at local bookstores or online at the bookstore of your choice.
The readings for this course matter. We don’t have time during the class periods to cover all the basic information you’ll need to start a business. It’s a big subject area.
The required reading is defined for each class. You can click here to get the details, class by class.
You’ll need to get three books, none of which costs more than $20, one of which is available for free online as an option, an alternative to buying it.
All three of these books should be available at the Oregon bookstore, and at the Borders and Barnes & Nobles stores in town as well. Call first if you’re going to make a special trip, because they do run out. They are also all available at amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com, and borders.com.
Also, two of the three, the Plan-As-You-Go Business Plan and the Art of the Start, are included with the purchase of Business Plan Pro, business plan software that I strongly recommend for this course (but don’t require). If you do choose to purchase Business Plan Pro, you can use the academic version that Palo Alto Software sells direct over the web at $49.95. And in that case you’ll have the ebook version of the Plan-as-you-go book installed with the software, and you can get the Art of the Start from Palo Alto Software for shipping and handling only. Don’t buy them twice. You can call first at 541-683-6162 or order online at at www.paloalto.com/academic/students/.
